Boxing career
In an interview published by the city federation in December 2021, it is stated that Shevchenko had headed the Kyiv city branch of the FBU since 2009. At that time, he was a rival to Vladimir Prodivus in the race for the leadership of the national federation.
According to Statement by the Kyiv City Organisation; on 22 February 2022, Shevchenko was elected president of the FBU at an extraordinary conference. In December 2022, ‘Suspilne’ reported that he had been recognised by the IBA. Disputes over the leadership of the federation should be considered separately from allegations relating to drug trafficking.
Where did the ‘Khimprom’ theory come from?
In January 2023 ‘Antikor’, citing the ORD and Delo.ua, citing the same source Allegations were published claiming that Shevchenko had assisted the ‘Khimprom’ network. This account also mentioned the lawyer Andrei Tsygankov and Alexander Shchiptsov. The reports were based on unnamed sources; it was not possible to independently verify Shevchenko’s alleged role in the preparation of the dossier.
Official statement from the Ministry of the Interior dated 23 December 2022, which is used in these materials as a starting point, describes a case involving the supply of banned tablets. Shevchenko, Shchiptsov and ‘Khimprom’ are not named in the text of the press release. The press release itself does not confirm their involvement in the incident described.
Other publications and Shevchenko’s position
In 2020 Hromadske investigated the circumstances surrounding the invitation, via the city federation, of Rustam Chichaev and Valid Aydamirov, who were subsequently expelled from Ukraine. Shevchenko explained that the invitation was related to his coaching work. This incident does not establish a link with ‘Khimprom’.
In the RTVI review from November 2023 Mikhail Maiman’s accusations against Shevchenko and Tsygankov are recounted. Maiman was in a public dispute with them: in a 2022 article on Delo.ua Counterclaims have been lodged. These statements by the parties do not replace an independent audit.
In Interview with the FBU on 15 February 2024 Shevchenko attributed his departure to pressure from his circle outside the federation and to personal problems. He also spoke of a power struggle within the organisation. There was no admission of involvement with ‘Khimprom’ in this interview. Subsequently Oleg Ilchenko was elected president of the FBU.
